Volunteer Work in India

A family welfare centre in Maharashtra State, southern India. Volunteers work with children of all ages who are living in urban slums. They also teach English to various groups such as school drop outs.

This same centre has HIV/AIDS awareness and outreach programmes whose fieldworkers also benefit from the English Teaching Programme.

A social welfare project with a nursery and orphanage in Maharastra State, southern India. The project is in an urban setting. Volunteers mostly work with young children. There is also some teaching of older children in nearby slums and involvement in a women’s cooperative.

A Tibetan monastery in the rural south of India. Volunteers work with pupils from 6 to 24 years old, with an emphasis on teaching conversational English. This placement is for male volunteers only.

A hospital and boys hostel in Maharashtra State, southern India with an outreach programme in rural health care and education. This project is in a rural setting. The work involves English teaching and lots of sport. This is also an ideal placement for those interested in medically related careers.

An eye hospital in a rural area in southern India which also has a rehabilitation centre for people who have previously suffered from leprosy. Volunteers also teach in a local primary school.

A social welfare centre which gives support to children from deprived backgrounds, some of whom are HIV+. Volunteers work with children of all ages with a particular emphasis on teaching English through sport and creative activities.
